I Get it Alf I Get It
Thanks Alf for you kind and generous response to my 'end of an era' article. As a result I have had another look at my commitments and dropped something else instead - so you win. I know that Paul is making quite an effort to attract a few more writers so we can both live in hope that he manages to find them. Meanwhile I will continue to contribute at least once a month.

I agree with Alf and am delighted that you have decided to carry on. I enjoy reading your articles very much and have learned such a lot about Ushaw Moor (where I lived for the first 19 years of my life) and the surrounding villages. I live in Essex but visit Ushaw Moor very regularly and have noticed all the changes that have taken place recently, your memories paint a very good picture of 'how things used to be' and are much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteWilf, I am glad you have changed your mind. I wonder why Brian McGloughlin , John Graham (my cousin) and others do not contribute more? We can still have a bit banter about our football favourite teams etc; etc;. I am looking forward to reading your next article. Cheers,Alf R
ReplyDeleteHi Alf and Wilf-following on what you said and in the same vein as heroes of Ushaw Moor do you remember Skipper Robinson? he was a little bit older than me I always remember the entertainment he provided at the Memorial Hall back in the early fifties. He was an excellent singer and dancer -the Billy Elliott of our time.We seem to have had shows at the Memorial Hall regularly-I wonder who organised them.I also remember Mr. Brewis who had shop at the bottom of Dale Street-he often provided the comedy.I wonder if anyone else can remember these shows and what happened to Skipper?
ReplyDeleteHi John, Great to see you are responding. I remember "Skipper Robinson" he lived in Whitehouse Court our back garden was opposite his He had a sister called Dorothy, his mam was Esther and his dad was pretty tall.He was also in my class and I used to "knock about" with him somtimes.I even went with him when he went for singing lessons in High View ( I think).I am sure he moved away to the pits in Nottingham. The family used to go on holiday to Epsom in Surrey. I think Dorothy moved away but returned to Ushaw Moor, maybe some one else will know.John you were nearly right Mr Brewis had a shop at the bottom of Ushaw Terrace, next door to Dale Street all the kids called in to buy their sweets before and after school. He was a very good cricketer for Ushaw Moor. Wilf will know that!! Cheers Alf R
ReplyDeleteReading about the Ushaw Moor Memorial Hall has reminded me of all the good times we had in the late sixties every Friday night at the youth club that was held there. While there, some of my friends and I decided to form a 'drama group', if I remember rightly, we only ever put on one play called 'The Midnight Hour' - however, we were put forward to enter the Durham Area Youth Drama Competition. I think the year was either 1968 or 1969, anyway, we practised hard and won the cup. I remember our celebrations and how happy we were when we appeared in the Durham Advertiser - happy days!
