To be truthful I am not best qualified to compile such a list but I have had a go anyway - to hopefully start things off! Yes the magnificent seven of all time. A list of residents that have made a difference to the village at sometime during the last hundred years plus. Just for fun why not contribute your own list?
My list in order of merit:
1 All Ushaw Moor's Pit Wives
2 Jack Joyce
3 John Thomas Hope
4 Ebenezer Shuker
5 Lilian Sowerby MBE
6 Philip Stoddart
7 Norman 'Soccer' Gleghorn

i think one or two people will be surprised at the absence of vicar Welby in your list
ReplyDeleteHello Frank. I did dwell over Vicar Welby. On the one hand I was torn betweeen his undoubted effect on the residents of Ushaw Moor ie he was charismatic, sympathetic and much more. My personal problem - hence the anquish at leaving such a fine man off the list - is that I do not think that he was imparting a truthful religious message. That is only my opinion and certainly I will not make any further reference to religion in any writings that I might create on this site. I have taken religion to the red line on here recently. The Ushaw Moor Memories site is not really meant to be my personal vehicle for pontificating about it! I might surely lose a few friends. Those friends have efficient brains to work out their own opinion of such matters and to live their lives accordingly.
ReplyDeleteKind regards - WB
hi wilf I think another contender would be Dr Millyard
ReplyDeleteI think Dr. Dickinson would be a contender too.He was the doctor before Dr. Millyard. He was nicknamed "Dr.Dickie" and his surgery was at the top of Arthur Street as was Dr.Millyard's.He put 5 stitches into my leg in 1948 while I was at home.In 1995 my mother needed 2 stitches but no one at Ushaw Moor sugery could do it, so it was off to casualty for a 4 hour wait!!-talk about progress.
ReplyDeleteAre there any of Jack joyce's relations still living in Ushaw?
ReplyDeletethanks john , what a nice thing to say, me dad was manager for 27 years down there. its dowson but not to worry he always answered to dawson or dawsy, he also got called shankly off the likes of staffy and dunny who them and the likes, took me dad and the juniors to county cup finals. me dad played a ringer once in a cup. had to take him off because his hair was died black and it started to rain and the die was coming out. cant remember the lad but he played for Newcastle united reserves. lol. the things you got away with in them days.
