ReplyDeleteThis book seems quite odd especially as it says the sources are Wikipaedia and other free on line sources. Any of us could have put that together! I looked him up, he writes books on all sorts of subjects.

ReplyDeleteSad. I have uploaded many photos but never bothered to watermark them or copyright protect them.Suppose i will see them soon being sold rather than free.
I saw that internet reference to the 'book' a few days ago but was not moved to comment about it until seeing this post.I have no interest in the curiously priced item and in anycase much of what most people would need is on this site [and the original one] for all to see without burning an almighty hole in the pocket.

ReplyDelete600 books! No self respecting writer would total that amount. Surely.Tell me I'm wrong. Charlotte Bronte would be skin and bone after writing that amount of books.

And i agree Wilf- that would be exhausting but it is all copy and paste and the author has obviously been googling and finding the same info as i have in the last few months. He has the book for sale in Sweden-Germany- France and other countries and those copies are in that country's language. Seems to be targeting tourism and i am sure some serious tourists would pay the price indicated (which could be a lot cheaper in other countries). As i see it, Ushaw moor now has a great tourist attraction for those who prefer the fitness/walking /cycling adventure. I myself would love to cycle or walk/jog the tracks that the old trains used to run along, Also the development /Park that has taken over the old Broompark Colliery sounds great.
ReplyDeleteAnnoying when foreigners make money from these books but its never too late for a local or locals to get together and put a booklet together with illustrated pictures and far more details and at a realistic price.
Paul, I hope you have copyright on the stuff you've put on this site. Wilf, I couldn't agree more. A bit of research on the 'net and a few visits to Durham County Records Office and a lovely book could be produced. I borrowed one from the British Library once, ordered from my local library - 'The History of the Deerness Valley', it was fascinating and it helped me no end with my family history - explaining the movement of families through the valley etc. It started of with the Romans and came up to the 20th Century. The Illustration on the front of this 'new' Ushaw Moor book looks more like and Alpine view! The lovely folk of Ushaw Moor will be yodelling from the College Road next ;)
ReplyDeleteIts pretty hard to claim copyright for everything posted on a social networking site like this and facebook etc. I think it would be up to each individual to copyright their own material.
ReplyDeleteFor example, i upload photos and i have the originals but have not taken a copyright on them but Paul cannot claim copyrights to them either because he doesnt own them. To suddenly put a copyright on all the material posted to this site would most likely mean contacting everyone that has made a post and requesting permission to be the copyright owner. I have seen people post photos and the photo has their name printed across it stating it is owned by them.
We don't know what is in the contents of this book but i am not going to be the one to fork out that amount to find out.LOL.
Copyright it is important, very important, but a few people do get into a silly pickle about it sometimes. Acknowledgement is also important and I will put my hands up to failing to do that a few times, although not so in academic work.
ReplyDeleteThere are some facts, as opposed to ideas, that are clearly in the public domain and yet sometime they are claimed to be copyright.
Roy Lambeth's photographs are a good example of appropriate claims for copyright, and I have claimed it a couple of times for work that I thought needed some protection, but a few people do go over the top.
