Durham County Advertiser- May 4th 1962.
The boys and girls of Form 3A at Ushaw Moor secondary modern school have just completed an interesting and comprehensive project. They have made a film.
The project started in October and the exposed film was sent in for processing Last month.
The entire job of writing and making up the story shows the natural development of secondary modern education and shows the character of the schools broad education.

ReplyDeleteAn absolute gem , and i can see how it won an award considering the kids came up with the story and put it into action.
ReplyDeleteHarry gets a shopping list from his mam and off he goes, only to be harassed by his friends and ends up having a friendly game of football. (loved how they used their jumpers etc for goals)
Then the girls doing their skipping ~what was the song they were singing~(memories)?
After another scuffle with the girls Harry finds a Half a Crown coin and him and the lads spend it on sweets.
Harry eventually presents the shopping list to the shop keeper and she adds the amount up and holds her hand out for the money.
Harry has no money in his pockets as the Half crown he found was the money his mother had given him for the shopping.
I would like to add subtitles to this movie as i am sure Harry uses the F word when he realises his mistake LOL.
Unless I lived a very sheltered life then the ' F ' word at that age may well have been ' flippen heck ' or something similar. The naughty words were blood** and Bu****.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fascinating film ; well done class 3a can someone tell me if that girl behind the counter in Hunwicks was Lorna Ivy regards Frank Clarke
ReplyDelete@ Frank Clark, it is indeed Lorna Ivy (now Toase of course), I have a famous Mother. She was interviewed and screened on the North East News a couple of years ago when interest in the film resurfaced, due to an exhibition of the film maker.
ReplyDeleteI was joking of course about subtitles and the F word.
ReplyDeleteBut to be quite honest, in October of 1961 when they say they started making the film i was 11 and it was my first year at Ushaw Moor secondary modern. The 3A class would have been the 13 year olds. I have to confess that i was familiar with those bad words even then.
I remember many a fight and argument broke out in the school yard and the language came out also. Of course if you got caught out swearing you were punished.
A person using the username of Davewill seems to be the person who re surfaced the film and showed it after converting it to DVD in 2009. He was born in 1932 so would have been 77 when he screened it at Ushaw.. I copied this conversation from another site and it is Eddie Tomlinson stating he was the editor and wishing he could see the film again.
ReplyDeleteBelow that is Davewills reply.
Sad that it wasnt done earlier and wondering if any of the actors even turned up for a copy.
Also wonder why none of the actors got a mention in the credits.??
Not many of the kids getting recognized but the boy with the curly hair hanging down his forehead certainly reminds me of George Wigham.
Eddie states~
Don't know if you are interested or not but I was involved in making one of the titles in your post.
I was 14 going on 15 when a bunch of students from a local college came to school and taught us how to make a film. The pupils did all of the work including writing the script, doing the storyboard, choosing the cast and locations, all of the actual shooting and directing. My job was post production and I was responsible for the editing and I'm listed on the credits. It's donkeys years since I've seen the film and would dearly love to see it again someday.
The film was "HARRY'S HALF-CROWN" and the year, 1963!

Amazing. This brings back a lot of memories. I was not involved in any way. I do remember seeing it though. I was in Class 3S at the time. I am sure our class and others went to the cinema to see it. Michael Billing known as Michael West in those days.
