Ushaw Moor Church Boy's Brigade with Ronnie Allinson wearing collar and tie. Apparently Mr Allinson ran the brigade for many years.
Can anyone identify any members of the brigade ?
This photograph came to me by way of a distant relative Ray Wilkinson who I am sure will be on the photographs somewhere.
Cheers Peter Clarke
Does anyone know the date of this because we think it might be our dad Dennis Dickinson, standing next to Captain Allison. I was also in the boys brigade in Ushaw Moor and was introduced there by my dad who knew Captain Allison well.
ReplyDeleteon the far left back row i think it is Maurice Facey and the far left is his brother Henry
ReplyDeletecorrection Henry is on the far right . what a silly mistake !!!!!
ReplyDeleteHenry was married to Maureen Facey and they had a dog called major and lived near me in Dale Street in the late 60's
ReplyDeleteMichael, I cannot remember your Dad being in the Church Lads Brigade but Peter Howarth is correct in identifying the two Facey brothers. I think the lad kneeeling on the front row on the right is Robin Proctor who lived down at the bottom of Station Road. Men like Ronnie Allison gave a great chunk of their lives to theses organisations and I can remember him well. The Church Lads Brigade when in marching order through Ushaw Mowere were always smart and in good order. They were a great sight marching to their bugles and drums. Organisations like the Church Lads Brigade instilled discipline and the differnce between right and wrong and these organisations are a great miss in todays society.
ReplyDeleteMichael have you any more photos like the ones you put on the web recently?
having looked at the photo again i think you are right about Robin Proctor ,all the other faces are familiar but i can't put names to them.
ReplyDeleteIdentification by Ray Wilkinson -- Back row left to right Maurice Facey - Captain Ron Allison -Billy Nattrus - A. Smith - Gorden Facey Front row Ken Seed - Ray Wilkinson - Robin Procter. Does anyone remember Ray, he left Ushaw Moor many years ago and lives in Doncaster. He promises to identity the footballers.
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention photograph taken July 1948.
ReplyDeleteRay Wilkinson is a very good friend of my cousin George Gilder (Holliday). I think they both joined HM Forces the same day. I met up with both of them a few years ago when we went to see our old school in Temperance Terrace, it was in a poor state and it was demolished shortly after our visit. I think it was Kath Grimes who showed us around,we were very glad to see it as it brought back some of the good and bad times we had there. It never stopped raining that day so we decided to go somewhere for a chat about our school days and we ended up in the "Stone Bridge" and enjoyed a nice meal. My cousin George lives in Norfolk, Ray in Doncaster and myself in Tynemouth (i used to be 10 Temperance Tce) P.s I
ReplyDeleteI joined the Church Lads Brigate after the Esh Road Sunday School closed. It was called the Chapel on the Hill next to the colliery managers house.
