Back in Edwardian times a coal mining family called Lowery lived at this address. There was George and Mary with their sons - Robert, Joseph, John and William. In addition there was daughter Frances and granddaughter Jane.
George and Mary originated from Middle Rainton.
There was a man called Jo Lowery who had a shop on the corner of station rd, going down the bank opposite Maud ross's shop. I remember it was always a bit dark. I think it sold sweets , ice creams and I recall he had a few tables in the shop and sold tea etc. I wonder if he was related.
ReplyDeleteWilf,
ReplyDeleteI think Olga Bradley was Jones maybe right. Joe Lowery had a milk delivery business as well as the shop in the exact area that Olga describes. It was an ice cream shop primarily but in the days of rationing that I can remember from my childhood ice cream was a very scarce commodity. The inside of the shop was dark as Olga describes but the woodwork was very heavy and beatifully designed. I have often wondered was the shop very popular with young people in the 20s and 30s. I know that the property is now a house. Another property shared by the community and now long since out of business. Another short drift towards the end of community spirit. Wilf you are a bugger for putting articles on the site which I read when I have had a few pints and the memory is active and I must reply to. Keep them coming Wilf. Was Olga Jones the sister of Biily (?) Jones who was the manager of the Club Hall Cinema?
