The Edwardian Brady Family

Back in 1911 they lived at 13 Ushaw Terrace, Ushaw Moor. Head of the family was Henry and even though  he was in his mid sixties he was still working at the pit as a cinder drawer. Wife Ann was slightly older.

23 yrs old son Henry lived with them and was employed as a joiner at the pit. Daughter Ellen was living there with her husband Joseph Trenton.

Michael Tully and Joseph Kiernan were boarders and Maggie Gathins was a servant.

Any memories of this family leading up to WW2 or beyond?

  1. There was a family named Brady lived in Hall Avenue. Henry Brady was a lorry driver for Brandon & Byshotles Urban District Council. I love the word Byshottles but where did originate and what does it mean? One there for Wilf B to sort out.

I can understand why the word has that meaning when in the Middle Ages the Bishop of Dirham was known as the Prince Bishop and with a title like that he must have owned vast swaithes of land. I understand that the Bishop had a hunting lodge or annex on the banks of the River Browney between Bearpark and Witton Gilbert. It is hard to get to grips with the idea of stripping out all the villages in the Durham area and replacing them with forests filled at one time in the past with wolves, deer, bears, boars and other animals long gone from our environment. The population must have been very small in those days. I could go on but I shall save it for another day. Thanks Frank settling a small mystery which I have thought of many times. I think it must be unique as I have never seen the word except relating to the now defunct Council.

  4. Henry Brady living at Ushaw Terrace 1911 was my great grandfather. I've never yet found out where he was born or whether he had brothers and sisters but I know he came from Ireland with his six children. I would be very keen to know if he is the relation of yours as well.

  5. Henry Brady who lived in Hall Avenue was my uncle. His father was also Henry. I'd be interested to know how you knew him and would love to hear about your memories of him.
