I note that in 1971 a higher education student called Mary Tobin wrote a dissertation entitled 'New Brancepeth: the development of a mining village in the Deerness Valley.'
It is available to read at the Durham County Record Office - reference D/X618/3. Note that they like you to book an appointment before visiting and if you are going to telephone them it's best to do so on a Thursday or Friday.
I guess that it will be a 10,000 word document [or more] and well worth reading for those steeped in the Valley.

Hello Wilf,
ReplyDeleteMary Tobin is my sister and she thought her work may have been ditched. I shall give her a ring tonight and tell her that her name is in lights on the Ushaw Moor web site. She will be over the moon to know where it is now stored. Thanks Wilf.
Wilf,
ReplyDeleteYou have made one lady at Bishop Auckland very happy. My sister, Mary Tobin produced this work whilst Studying at a Teachers Traing College in Darlington. She left the document in the College Library for other students to peruse. When the College closed she asked for the return of the document but was told no one knew of it's whereabouts. We spoke on this subject when we visited my sister on the 28th June this year and lo and behold you found it for us. I have contacted the Records Office and they are running a copy off for me which I shall pick up next week and take it down to Bishop for one happy and grateful lady. Many thanks again Wilf.
