Does anyone have any photos or info about the explosion down the pit as my Great Grandad William Timmons died in that. There was a massive funeral and photos but the photos we had as a family were given to the newspaper and they lost them.

  1. Dear Gillian Vargas,a detailed account of the explosion and a newspaper cutting can be seen on the Durham Mining Museum site!

Just Google: Durham Mining Museum - go into U for Ushaw Moor Colliery and click your great uncle's name.JYou might need a wee bit of patience but you will find it. I am thrilled to have helped.

  2. Hello Gillian, My grandmother was Elizabeth Turnbull nee Timmins ( or Timmons) the sister of William and George. While Wm. was killed 14/11/32 at Ushaw Moor colliery his brother George was killed I'm told on this eighteenth birthday at the Battle of the Somme. I have a copy of the death certificate of Wm. which shows he was killed at the age of 31 years ( not 54 as stated in the Durham Mining Museum records.) I have a photograph of two ladies whom my aunt ( Elizabeth's daughter) believes to be her mother's mother and her mother. They would therefor be Wm and George's mother and maternal grandmother Both Wm & George had a sister Jane who I remember from my youth, she married a guy called Harry Dryden, Jane died about 1956,
Hope this makes sense to you and should you like a copy of this photograph just contact me at Percivalandcarole@hotmail.co.uk
