Durham Boys v Crook - Ferrens Park circa 1959
Here we have a photograph of the Durham Boys football team with their captain Norman Ferguson of Ushaw Moor, his best friend the late Les Gleghorn to his right ( both Johnstonians ) and then Vic Meredith of Pittington School.
On the top row we have identified Brian Crampton, Ian Pattison ( South Hetton ) and Robert Hancock. Can W.B. identify himself please and anyone else he is able to.

The only player I recognize after 50 plus years, apart from Norman Ferguson, is Johnny Weirs - third from the left at the back. At least I am 99.5% sure that is speedy Weirs. No doubt I played against most, if not all, of these players. My time playing for Durham Boys' was during autumn 1958 - 5-1 victory and a 2-0 defeat. One of the grounds I played on was The Brewery Field, Spennymoor [ the 5-1 win]. We also played Kelloe Boys away. I never played at Ferens Park although I saw many Northern League matches there and got autographs from the likes of Seamus O'Connell. I also ran on the pitch at halftime , together with Michael McNamara, during the 1957 FA Cup match between Durham City [0] and Tranmere Rovers [3]. I tripped up and most of the crowd seemed to find that amusing.
ReplyDeletePittington and Bearpark were the two outstanding school sides in division 'B' ie the second division -Bearpark's record was brilliant that year. I played in the 'A' league so would not have played against Vic Meredith.
What a brilliant picture to turn up! Great stuff.

I apologise Wilf for my assuption that 1959 was your year of representation. Had I been more diligent I would have seen in the archives of Oct 2006 under comment 9" Some local footballers." you had stated 1958 was the year you had played and also list your other team members. Note in the 1958 team there were two Ferguson's and a Meredith, explained I feel by the fact Norman and Vic were very talented and playing ahead of their year. The other Ferguson would have been Eric, Norman's older brother.

ReplyDeletePeter it is fairly clear that there are half a dozen or so enthuiasts up for this site plus a lot of occasional surfers. If I am right about that it is a touch sad. Local history can be enthralling. I like to think that the magnificent Peter plus the pigeon fancier [what's it all about Alfie?], Brian - he of the busy working men's club and fine writing, and Sheila the potentially sensational author have [and will continue to[ light up the site like a Christmas tree. Above all let's not forget Mr Clough - not Nigel of Derby County - Paul.

The goalkeeper must be Les Ker. He played for Whinny Hill school, Durham Boys, England Boys and Luton Town. Having checked the records I can confirm that he never played at Football League first team level.

Not a lot happening on the site at the moment but we will see. Just a thought under the headline 'sour grapes' - although I made two appearances for Durham Boys at outside left I also suffered a disappointment. I got a trial at left back but was not selected despite it being by best position. I recall the day - lots of snow and no touchlines to be seen. I recall that not being able to locate the touchline put me off significantly. Perhaps it should not have done and perhaps I would not have been selected anyway! Full credit to the lad that was picked for not being put off in such a manner. I imagine that it if it had been match day, rather than a trial, they would have had to do something about it - either call it off or get a workforce to clear the snow.

You are right it is me as the goalkeeper. The two players in the front row on the right are Geordie Cummings and Peter Davison both of Whinney Hill School.
ReplyDeleteI spent three and half years at Luton Town and received three injuries which kept me out for over six weeks at a time. It finished my football career. I have this photo in my scrapbook, great memories of Durham and District football games.
Vic Meredith joined the Police and I did meeting up with him again as a colleague in the late 1960's. I lived at Pittington but went to Whinney hill. When working for National Police Training at Durham I spotted Geordie Cummings driving a taxi and had a long chat with him about school days and football.
