The 65th annual Durham Miners' Gala took place on July the 24th 1948. The speakers were arranged on two platforms. Platform one included the likes of Rt. Hon. Sir Harley Shawcross, KC., MP. [Attorney General], Rt. Hon. Sir Stafford Cripps, KC., MP, and Sam Watson the General Secretary of the Durham Miners' Association.
On platform two, amongst others, could be found Mr Arthur L Horner, General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, the Rt. Hon. Aneurin Bevan MP. Minister of Health, and Mr John Joyce [our Jack].
So Ushaw Moor's own - well documented on this site, was rubbing shoulders with Aneurin Bevan. Bevan was a miner's son and born in 1897. He left school at the age of 13 and started at the local pit. It was during the strike of 1926 that Bevan became one of the leaders of the South Wales miners. He was appointed Minister of Health just after WW2 and had the responsibility of establishing the NHS. He died on 06/07/1960.

ReplyDeletenot sure butjohns mam used to be the teacher at st. josephs r.c. ushaw moor.
ReplyDeleteWould be same John. Can't recall bit might have lived ash avenue. Dad was alderman or something. Wonder what became of them. Long time ago...thanks x
ReplyDeleteI knew Bernard and John Joyce and they had two sisters called Mary and Gertrude. I used to hang around with them when I was younger. I lived in Number 9 Ash avenue and they lived in either 15 or 17, It would depend on whether there was a number 13, but I dont think there was.
ReplyDeleteHi Olga. Definitely same family, wonder what became of them. Think Billy Jones and Dave Lewney might have lived in Ash Avenue as well, but might be remembering that wrong :)
ReplyDeleteYes dave Lewney lived next door but one to us in Ash avenue and Billy Jones is my brother but we also have an uncle Billy Jones (my dads brother) who lives in Oakridge Road.:)
ReplyDeleteHi again. I'm still in touch with dave on Facebook. I used to come and stay with Linda and Sheila Williamson who lived in lilac park. So many years have passed, but I remember quite a few people. Sadly not yourself :(.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I know isnaw moor is because my mam who was from low fell was billeted with a couple tan and Harry salvidge. During ww2. They never lost touch. They were in high view, but when I came up in the 60s were in Deerness view. I used to stay there, or with Linda and Sheila. There was some connection with your brother billy and a neighbour of tan and Harry. Billy would come up there, he was friends with Davey who was working on a farm near the college road. I did a ton on th back of his Tripton up there. Must have been mad lol
However drifted off the Joyce connection. Any idea what became of John and Bernard ?
Nice reminiscing. Thank you
Pen
Yes, my brother Bill was always up ushaw college and our Grandmother lived in number 2 deerness view in the 60s, I remember Tan and Harry who lived next door to them. What is your proper name , I might remember you. There was a big family of us, I have 3 sisters and 3 brothers. I havn't heard anything about John or Bernard since the early 70s when I worked in the Flass inn at Ushaw moor. I remember someone telling me that Bernard was drinking too much, but dont know what happened to them after that. Their Mother moved down to the bottom of station road in the 70s, my mam and dad moved down there opposite side of the road but I cant recall ever seeing any of them visiting their mother.
ReplyDeleteAh your grandmother. That sounds familiar. Tan and Harry used to come down and stay with us often. They were like grandparents to me. My proper name is pennie. Tan was the aunt of Sheila and Linda's dad Norman Williamson. I spent many summer holidays in isnaw moor between about 1963 and 1970. Was there for Christmas and new year probably 1968. Not sure which year. Best New Year's Eve. Everyone was out in the street. But so friendly. Don't get that nowadays down here.
ReplyDeleteWhat became of your brother billy. I think I have a picture of him somewhere, maybe with dave. I used to take a,lot of photos and movies.
I guess we won't know what became of John and Bernard. Not sure if dave knows. Or Peter mcgarr, I speak to him online. Be interested to see if they are same family as jack Joyce.
Is a long time ago now.
My brother Billy is living at Esh winning in a bungalow with his wife. He has a lot of arthritus in his back but still manages to drive and get about. I can remember our Billy hanging around with someone called Outersides up at Ushaw college. Dave Lewney is on my facebook friend list, I think he worked for the fire service, but might be retired now. I still see his sister Lucy. She comes to bingo at bearpark where I now live, but recently both her and her husband Ronnie have been in poor health. My grandmothers name was Sally Jones and granda was called Teddy. I think I recall being told that Tan took in a couple of children during the war and either my sister Jackie or my aunty Olga became great friends with one of them.
ReplyDeleteMy memory is not as good as it used to be , but something in the back of my mind tells me that Bernard and John were related to Jack Joyce.
