A Chance To Google Last Resting Place Ushaw Moor

I came across Last resting place.com. It can get you into Ushaw Moor cemetery - in a manner of speaking - with some details and photographs; this could be especially useful for  family historians, and such like, that live some distance away.

I have not used it myself.

  2. I used lastrp.com when i googled the names of the nightingales that worked in the pits and lastrp.com showed 3 gravestones. Would have been nice to see the names on the head stones but the images are all uploaded in very small low definition and he wants 3 pounds for a better image. I would probably pay that if i found something of interest on one of the stones but i would have thought you would have been able to see a little more information first. He states on the home page that all images are between 1 and 3 pounds but i dont think theres too many at 1 pound.
Theres not many sites dealing with ancestry that help you for free. Usually until you find a link to what your looking for and then they pounce at your pocket .

  3. Yes Denise you are right. It is a classic case of me seeing what I expected to see. Do not get old Denise. Do not get old.

Thanks for the feed back Ron.

  4. Thank you for the advice, Wilf ;) If I don't get old...what is the alternative? Haha.

For anyone looking for headstones related to coal miners try the Durham Mining Museum website. I've found them very helpful, in fact one of the team took a trip to Ushaw Moor cemetery to take a picture of my great uncle Leslie Holliday's headstone for me, whilst adding to their catalogue of headstones of men who died in the pits. A bonus was they also photographed all of the graves with the Holliday surname whether they were miners or not, helping me greatly with family history research..

  5. Hi Ron
I have taken the liberty of checking the 3 gravestones of Nightingales in the Ushaw Moor Council cemetery for you They are double graves and are for:
John Joseph Nightingale : died 05/08/1962 & Eva died 24/03/1975
Thomas William Nightingale : died 04/01/1961 & Elizabeth Ann died 23/09/1954
    John G Nightingale : died 11/03/1948 & Sarah Agnes died 15/03/1953

If these are your relatives I have a copy of the full inscriptions. I also have taken photos but the inscriptions are too poor to show without a class camera which mine isn't.

If you want the full details but don't want them on this web site I will need your e-mail address.

    Regards from Broom Park

Thanks John. nice of you to do that. I never met any other nightingales when i lived in the area - even though i attended 3 schools in Ushaw. Also never known any relatives on my Dads side and there seems to be a block now that i am trying to put a family tree together. My fathers birth certificate shows - William Joseph Nightingale Born -1st August 1920. Mothers name - Lillian Nightingale. Father -unknown.
Story is that Lillian fell pregnant when working as a maid and would not abort or get rid of the baby and was sacked and possibly paid to keep her mouth shut. She struggled to financially support the baby so he was then at 2 years of age taken in and brought up by the Curly family who were John and Mary Curly who were quite affluent and lived in Chorely. Marys maiden name was maloney and she was a relative of Lillian but i can not seem to find any record of Lillian Nightingale. Still a possibility that the Nightingales In ushaw could be related. I am happy to have any details on this website as i might get lucky and get a reply from someone who might be related that can fill in a few gaps. But i have no problems about giving you my email either, just trying to figure out how we do that (ha).
