When we were kids we used to kneel on the bridge parapet and rest against the rail and stare at the water passing over the steps below us. This always created a feeling that you and the bridge were moving backwards. If the river was in flood the faster you moved backwards. There was a lot more water in the Deerness in those days as millions of gallons of water was pumped daily from the pits upstream into the river.
I do not know whether these facts are true but when I was a child living at New Brancepeth I heard grown ups state that a man, many years before, had hung himself from the bridge and was found by Miss Jane Bramley, a teacher at St. Josephs School at Ushaw Moor, whilst she was walking to school
I never knew whether there was any truth in this or it was just gossip.
The feeling is the same as in a parking lot and the person beside you is pulling out and you stop. The person beside you is reversing out and even though you know you have the foot on the brake you feel your moving forward. A great feeling and a great example of us kids with the river beneath the bridge. Relly bridge tells a story of a young mother jumping onto the rails. Sometimes stories are there to remind us not to do certain things.??
