1-20 Was Demolished, I think sometime after the war.

Does anyone remember exactly when the lower part of the street was demolished and why ? I always thought it was due to subsidence.

  1. I think they were knocked down either late 50's or early 60's as there were a lot of Cree's built on the top allotments out of the wood from the houses.

  2. Many hanks Alf, my parents were unsure as they were already gone by the time they moved in around 1968.

Do you think it was due to mining subsidence. ?

  4. we lived in number 6 after the war for a few years can't remember exactly but i think they would be pulled down because they were not up to living standards. they were 2 up and one down with a scullery and pantry .no bathroom ,on hot water on tap all cooking and hot water came from the big old fashioned range .very very basic living conditions .crude you might say.only just better than nothing.

  5. I knew Tommy Bewick he was actually a army "Captain" he raced pigeons and was secretary of Ushaw Moor HS. I worked with Jack Hopper at New Brancepeth Co-op he drove the green grocery travelling shop, Ann and Jack also had the Fish Shop at the end of High View.George and Jill Rose were friends of ours, George was a great goalkeeper. Most of the other occupants I called on when I was the "Man from the Pru".I knew Johnny McQuillan and his brother "Paddy" also sister Loretta who married John Ainsworth. My memory still remembers some things and Peter is right the houses were very basic living conditions but they had a great view over to New Brancepeth and Brandon etc: in the Deerness Valley.

  6. Very interesting reading about Ladysmith Tce, i'd not known that half of it is now gone! Back in the late 80's early 90's i used to knock around the streets with Gary Collinson (i think the Collinsons still live in the terrace?) and i do remember there being some kind of alcove in the wall of the end house that we used to sit in...looking back now, it was probably a fireplace! I'll have to have a look back up, although it'll probably be hidden by the new houses now.
Linked to Ladysmith Tce - some years ago the Vicarage at the end came up for sale and my parents were very close to buying it...then at the last minute they bottled out. I wish they had done, i remember it's quite a big nice house (as Vicarages normally are!) I've even been in it some how...again years ago probably with Gary..i remember the colourful carpet and possibly a grandfather clock...its strange the things that stick in your mind!
    Sorry to wander there!

  7. Thanks for your comments Matt and welcome. Half of Ladysmith Terrace was demolished in the 50's or 60's so I guess you would only know it as it is now, ie without the new housing; as I did also.

Yeah Gary's Mam Dad still next door to my Mam and Dad, no:30. Gary I think works for BT and now has a young child.

I knew Terry the Vicar very well and knocked around with Anthony his son, who I think now lives in York.

Anyway thanks for your comments, and look forward to reading more from you.
