St Wilfrid's school is situated in the Gateshead area and its log book entry for 01.09.1939 states:
All children assembled in departments as instructed. Infant party numbered 24 children and 5 voluntary helpers under my supervision. We joined Juniors and Seniors in Junior playground and after prayers and hymns for God's protection on all, we set out for Gateshead Station at 12.30pm, our destination Ushaw Moor.
The source of this information is the 'Tomorrow's History Made In The North East site'.
Do any of our elders recall an intake from Gateshead?

Both of my parents were at Ushaw Moor School at the time. Sadly my dad, Bill Pearson, passed away recently. I will ask my mother if she remembers.
ReplyDeleteI remember a lad named Alan Archer from Gateshead staying with a family in Co-operative terrace in New Brancepeth. Alan was older than me and after the war Alan turned up on a bike at St josephs Scholol at Ushaw moor and was shown around the school and introduced to each class by the Headteacher Miss Jenny Unsworth. ReplyDeleteDenise. Sorry to hear about your Dad. Did he live in Victoria Court next door to another family also called Pearson?
ReplyDeleteJust a recap on the original text. This school was situated in the Old Fold area of Gateshead and stood alongside the Felling by pass. This whole area including the school was demolished a few years ago to make for more new housing. Brian Mc.
ReplyDeleteYes, Brian I think it was 23 Victoria Court. His parents were Bill and Violet, he had an elder sister, Charlotte, a younger brother, Robert and a younger sister, Pauline. Pauline is the only one left now, Robert died aged 43 and Charlotte 53. The Pearsons next door were my grandad's brother, Tommy and his wife Meg (nee Loftus) and sons Tom, Raymond, Albert and Leslie. We left Ushaw Moor in 1962. I gather my dad had a bit of a 'reputation' when he was young...he mellowed as he grew older, was always a hard worker and he did really well for himself. Did you know the family?
ReplyDeleteHello Denise. I remember your Dad and the whole of both the Pearson families. I think both families moved from Ushaw Moor Colliery to Victoria Court. It was the two youngest of your Dads family that I can remember. I left the village in 1957 and I know that many families moved away and followed the work in the mines further South. I have met your cousin Albert in the Catholic Club at Ushaw Moor in the recent past. Time passes and families move in and out of the village,. It was nice to hear from you Denise and I hope you have a Happy New Year. Brian Mc.
ReplyDeleteHi Brian, You were almost totally correct. My dad's family moved to Ladysmith and then to Victoria Court. We moved to Nottinghamshire in 1962. I never liked it there! Happy New Year to you, All the best, Denise
ReplyDeletehello denise your dads family lived in number 6 ladysmith we moved in after them the girl charlotte married tommy rothwell he was my mothers brother funny what you find out on this web site take care HAPPY NEW YEAR.
ReplyDeleteNice to read about the old times. I remember everything what has been said also my Grandparents used to live in Old Fold Gateshead. Yes it gets very interesting, lets have more of this!!
ReplyDeleteHi, Peter...Small world! I think I must be related in one way or another to most Ushaw Moor families!! The Rothwells are in my family tree three times (and probably more!). Tommy Rothwell died a couple of years ago at Morley, Leeds. His daughter, Tracy, lives in Hull. My grandad, Bill Harrison's sister, Mary, married a Rothwell. My great aunt, Eva Holliday married Jimmy Rothwell..their son is Alf whose comment is below yours. Tommy Rothwell has a brother who lives near Preston, Lancs. The interesting thing about the Rothwells is that their mother Mamie was born in America. Alf has the full details on that. Mamie is buried in Ushaw Moor Cemetery. So, Peter.. we are related distantly through various marriages...I wouldn't like to work that one out! Nice to hear from you. Denise
ReplyDeleteI spoke to a lad from Gatehead last night who had been a pupil at St.Wildfires many years ago. He stated that Alan Archer who wrote about is still alive and living in Gateshead. He served as a police officer. Small world.
ReplyDeleteBrian Mc.
With reference to Alan Archer who you said lived in Cooperative Tce, New Brancepeth. I wonder if he was related to Lily Archer who lived in Prospect Tce (opposite Coop Tce)?.I am sure she lived with Mr & Mrs Joe Godoj (Joe was polish)who used to have racing pigeons. I am sure Lily married Charlie Brown from New Durham.
ReplyDeleteAlf,
ReplyDeleteAll I can remember about the family Alan Archer stayed with was that the lady baked wedding cakes and cakes of that description. Nice to hear from you again.
