I was wondering if you could give me some help regarding a resident of Ushaw Moor in 1917. Private Alfred Bates Turner was the Son of James and Eliza Turner, of 2 Broadgate Cottages, Flass Hall, Ushaw Moor, Broadgate, Co. Durham, he was serving with the Sherwood Foresters when he was killed at Houthulst Forest, nr. Elverdinghe, Belgium.I was in Ypres last weekend attending a dedication of a Memorial Stone to The Foresters at Tyne Cot Cemetary, I was talking to a fellow W.F.A. (Western Front Association) Member from Belgium who told me they had the original headstone naming Private Turner and it would be nice if we could find any information out about Pte. Turner or if there were any living relations who we could make contact with, with regards to the headstone as we near the 100th anniversary of World War 1.
Could you tell me if Ushaw Moor has a W.W.1 memorial and is Pte Turner named, also any information that may lead to finding a relation would be gratefully received.

I have had a look for you and did spot two Turner's as follows:
Pte M Turner CGM. You will very probably be aware that those initials stand for Conspicuous Gallantry Medal. A Pte A Turner is the second one.
Just check that those found are for WW1 rather than WW2.

My name is Alfred Bates Rothwell and I was called after my uncle Alfred Bates Holliday who I was told was called after Alfred Bates Turner. My grandmother was called Turner before she married my grandfather J Holliday. My uncle AB moved to Nottingham early sixties with his wife Norah and family and later in Edwinstowe . His family live near Ollerton. My grandmothers name was Margaret Turner.
ReplyDeleteHello, my great grandma was Margaret Holliday nee Turner. My Grandmother was Eliza Harrison nee Holliday. My Great Uncle was Alfred Bates Holliday. If I remember correctly, Eliza Bates married James Turner. There are lots of relations through the Turner/Holliday line. Alf, who left the above message, is my mother's cousin. Regards, Denise
ReplyDeleteMore info: Alfred Bates Holliday was born on November 20th 1917. He married Norah Carter from West Cornforth, their children are as follows; Leslie Ivan Holliday born 1962,Jean(Truswell) born 1949, Margaret (Robinson) 1951,Norah (Smith) 1953 and Judith (Boardman)1967.
