Victoria Court

Reading upon the site that Frank Clarke had met Wilf Bell in the Shakespeare for a pint brought back memories when we lived at 38 Victoria Court having moved there in January 1947 just before that terrible winter.

Our neighbour at 37 Victoria Court was Mr and Mrs Turnbull along with their family, Harry, Percy and Greta and I think there was another daughter called Millie.  My dad died in September that year and the Turnbulls were very supportive to tour family.  Happy Days.  Was that your grandparents and family, Frank?

  1. Welcome back Brian. An excellent writer steeped in the history of the Deerness is back in the fold. I note how busy you are, and certainly there is more to life than wrting articles about Ushaw Moor, but having said any time you can give - lots or little - will be welcomed by all. Believe me!

  2. it was indeed brian sadly of my relatives that you remembered only greta is still with us. others were my mother peggy her sisters maisie and milly i am sure a trigger to your memory would be my sister gloria and my brother peter unfortunatley gloria died this year but peter is hale and hearty living in hartlepool. it really is great to hear voices from so far back it does not seem five minutes ago that i was playing in my grans back garden and yours i think my earliest life memory is of my grandad peter turnbull (known as three half crowns) inthat house happy memories thank you for remembering and i will try to contribute alittle more often to this site as i fully intended to

  3. They were happy days Frank and your grandparents and your Mam and Dad I well remember. Peggy Turnbull. It makes me seem very old but I can remember going into Mrs Tunbulls where your Mam was tucked up in bed with a tiny baby in her arms. The first time I ever saw you Frank as you were that baby! I was very saddened to hear about Gloria passing away.
